: Six Housing Authorities Honored at Housing Georgia 2005 Conference

Commissioner Mike Beatty and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) hosted the Fifth Annual Housing Georgia Conference and Magnolia Awards to recognize outstanding achievements in affordable housing. The November 17th event, held at the Cobb Galleria Centre, included presentations from award winners in six categories: Affordable Rental Housing, Creative Partnerships, Homeownership, Local Government Initiatives, Special Needs and Superior Design.

“DCA hosts the annual Housing Georgia conference because quality, affordable housing is vital to Georgia’s economic health and community development,” said DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty. Six Georgia housing authorities were among the organizations honored at the November conference. The award winning housing authorities are:

  • Athens Housing Authority ― Received two awards for Special Achievement in Affordable Housing in the superior design and homeownership categories for ACT I Homes.
  • Atlanta Housing Authority ― Received a Magnolia Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing, along with its partners, Integral Group LLC and Real Estate Strategies, LLC, for Ashley CollegeTown at West End, in the affordable rental category.
  • Camilla Housing Authority ― Received a Magnolia Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing in the local government initiatives category for its workforce housing program.
  • Housing Authority of DeKalb County ― Received an award for Special Achievement in Affordable Housing in the local government initiative category for its Sugar Mill Creek subdivision.
  • Macon Housing Authority ― Received a Magnolia Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing, along with its partner, the Middle Georgia Disability Connections, for it Supportive Housing program. Macon also received a Special Achievement in Affordable Housing in the affordable rental category for its 2009 Vineville Senior Housing development.
  • Sylvester Housing Authority ― Received a Special Achievement in Affordable Housing in the local government initiative category for their Worthington Way revitalization project.

In addition to the Magnolia and Special Achievement Awards, the annual housing conference recognizes an organization or individual for the prestigious Housing Champion award. The Housing Champion award is for long-term achievement that is “above and beyond.” This year, the Macon Housing Authority became the first housing authority to receive the Housing Champion award in recognition of its dedication to quality affordable housing and to its innovation and creativity in creating a wide range of housing opportunities for the people of Macon.
