The Georgia Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities (GAHRA) was recently pleased to present $ 36,250.00 in scholarships to residents of public and assisted housing in the State of Georgia.  The awards were made at the Scholarship Awards Luncheon at GAHRA’s Spring Conference held at Jekyll Island, Georgia on May 20, 2019. 

Awards were presented in Academic and Vocational categories to both Adult and High School Scholarship Winners.  Six applications were submitted for the Adult Scholarships. The winners will be pursuing careers in Pharmacy, Health Care, Cosmetology, Legal Services and Education. 

Thirteen applications were received for the High School awards.  All of the candidates exhibited tremendous qualities including outstanding grade point averages, various extra-curricular activities, and many worked after-school jobs but still maintained their excellent academic standing. 

Both Adult and High School applicants, residing in GAHRA properties or receiving assistance from a GAHRA member agency, were eligible to apply for scholarship funding.  The scholarship funds awarded each winner will be forwarded, for their benefit, to their chosen academic institution.

The GAHRA Scholarship Committee is Chaired by Harden A. Oldfield from Augusta and the Vice Chair is Danita Wiggins from Albany.  Members include:  John Marria from Cairo, Bruce Herring from Elberton, Angela Strickland from Brunswick, Kevin Price from Wrightsville, Ella Murphy from Marietta, Ann Dobson from Jasper, Vickie Paris from Dallas, Joe Thomas from Camilla and Charles Alexander from Columbus.

The East Point Housing Authority seeks an experienced Full-Time Housing Choice Voucher Specialist, responsible for assisting low-income families to obtain and maintain safe, decent, sanitary and affordable housing while promoting self-sufficiency in compliance with the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program. Under general supervision of the HCV Coordinator, this position performs various duties related to the case management of HCV participants and regulatory compliance of the HCV program Prior experience in case management and technical duties related to the implementation of governmental rent subsidy programs. This position requires prior experience implementing HUD Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, with knowledge of program rules and regulations. Knowledge of rental lease agreements, rent collection procedures, and eviction processes as needed to provide consultation to participating landlords. Must be organized and have a good attitude and friendly disposition toward the public. Knowledge of HUD Portability a plus! Proficient with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of SACS Software a plus! High school diploma or GED; supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in social services or public housing program administration; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes public housing program administration, customer interaction, and general office work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid GA driver’s license and have reliable transportation. Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Carrollton Housing Authority (CHA) Executive Director, the Maintenance Manager is responsible for supporting on-going property maintenance functions at the CHA. The Maintenance Manager directs the activities of the Maintenance Department which includes inventory, properties, facilities, and grounds operations. Duties include, but are not limited to, preserving and protecting the long-term physical and operational viability of all CHA properties and facilities; responsibility for the administrative functions of the department including budget preparation, personnel management; directing maintenance staff and advising the Executive Director regarding general facilities matters. Additionally, is responsible for the selection, training and evaluation of subordinate staff; prepares and presents reports and recommendations as needed. The Maintenance Manager helps establish and maintains a level of pride in the performance and appearance of CHA communities by ensuring the properties remain safe, comfortable homes that our residents can be proud to reside in.

Duties include, but are not limited to, training and supervising maintenance personnel; supervising all phases of CHA’s modernization program, consulting subordinates in conferences, reviewing records and reports, and inspecting physical layouts and operations; procuring materials and supplies for the modernization program; approving purchase orders and vendor invoices for payment; supervising and directing routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance activities; ensuring all work orders are completed expeditiously, particularly emergency work orders; conducting inspections of grounds and facilities for proper maintenance and upkeep; overseeing all Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspections; tracking work order types, completion, and preparation of management reports on work order activity; performing vacancy inspections and producing vacancy turnover orders; maintaining inventory files, procuring required items, and communicating with vendors; keeping informed about public housing matters by careful study of HUD regulations, laws and ordinances, and publications related to public housing matters; and maintaining positive public relations.

Qualifications: Graduation from high school, or GED equivalency. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered sufficient. Previous public housing experience is highly desirable.
